Code For Sustainable Homes (CSH) Assessments
What is The Code?
The Code is a national standard intended to guide industry in the design and construction of sustainable homes. It is a means of driving continuous improvement, innovation and achievement in sustainable home building by setting performance targets which are more demanding than building regulations.
The Code uses a rating system to communicate the overall performance of a home. Nine design categories are assessed, including energy use/CO2 emissions, materials and water use. Some elements are mandatory, with credits awarded for meeting criteria in each category. The credits are used to calculate an overall code rating from 1 to 6, with 6 representing the highest standard of achievement.
Why Design a Home to Meet Code Standards?
A code rating of any level is an indicator of quality and thoughtful design, demonstrating to a potential purchaser that the property is designed to be innovative and to exceed the minimum requirements. It is also likely to be more economical to run, with lower heating, electricity and water usage.
Increasingly, local authorities require a minimum code rating as a prerequisite for new developments.
